For many people beer drinking is serious business. It’s synonymous with relaxation and having a good time. With billions of beer drinkers across the globe, there is a huge battle by brewers to become the libation of choice for consumers. Ultimately, becoming a popular choice comes down to availability and brand recognition through marketing. Keep in mind that popularity doesn’t necessarily mean being the best. The beers listed below rarely win any taste tests. However, quality is easily trumped by savvy marketing, national loyalties and pure tradition. The following five beers are the most popular by sales volume in the United States.

1 . Bud Light

‘Real men of genius’ (and women) have made this the top selling beer in America since 2001. Not only is this light beer number one in the states, but it is the top single brand by label worldwide. Bud light continues its prominence through innovative marketing and a consistent presence in bars across the globe.

2 . Budweiser

Truly the ‘King of Beers’, Budweiser has been ruling this list since its creation in 1876. Budweiser is one of the few pre-prohibition beers that survived the prohibition. Right behind its trimmer brother, the original Budweiser is symbolic of beer worldwide. Budweiser runs neck and neck with Heineken as the most widely available beer across the globe.

3 . Miller Light

“Great Taste…Less Filling” is the motto for Milwaukee’s giant in the world of beer. The first successful light beer produced in the US, Miller light has been a standard since its birth in the early 70’s.

4 . Coors Light

The ‘Silver Bullet’ has been an American favorite since it was first brewed in 1978. Not only is its packaging globally recognized, it features a unique “cold certified label” that turns the white mountains to blue when the beer reaches the perfect beer drinking temperature of 4 degrees Celsius.

5. Corona Extra

The Mexican staple is by far the top imported beer by sales volume in the US. Not only is the brand popular in North America, but it has brew drinkers across the world grabbing for limes. Corona ranks number four on the global sales list. Helping the cause is the fact that Corona Extra is on the short list of beers that are widely available worldwide.

The United States ranks number one in total beer consumption worldwide. Per capita, however it falls all the way to 13th. So what does the rest of the world drink? Well for the most part each country has their own top preference but several brands have a large presence worldwide. China’s huge population has helped national brand, Snow beer, to earn the distinction of the world’s best selling beer by volume. But the brand is split between several different labels meaning by visual distinction, American label Bud Light is still king.

Here are the top beers worldwide by sales volume:

1 . Snow (China)
2 . Bud Light (US)
3 . Budweiser (US)
4 . Skol (Brazil)
5 . Corona (Mexico)
6 . Heineken (Netherlands)
